Network setup

Firewall/Router

Many people are using a dedicated internet connection with a cable or adsl provider. This means the computer is online and vulnerable as soon as the machine is turned on. Antivirus or anti spyware software can't prevent people from entering your pc. They can access the system hardly unnoticed and abuse personal documents or important data.

In spite of many firewall applications being available for Windows, it's recommended to use Linux for this job. ADSL modems with built in firewall are often vulnerable anyway and provide insufficient protection. Create a safe home network which the whole family can rely on.

Deploying an old pc from 486 and up with two network cards, a hub or a switch is already enough. The firewall gets attached between the cable/adsl modem and the hub. The workstations and servers are also connected to the hub, thus creating the network. The linux pc handles everything automatically and provides the computers with internet. A combination with an Access Points or wireless clients is also possible.
